What are you looking at…?
I'm looking at everything and nothing. I'm looking at the crowd for target indicators. I'm looking for that person who seems out of place, uncomfortable, too fidgety, poised for attack, nervous and unsettled. I'm looking at hands, I'm looking at eyes and I'm reading body language.

I'm looking at symbols/signs, words on clothes, the way the clothes are worn, bulges, bags, snags and contours of bodies. I'm looking at the way people move and who they move with as well as the way they interact with those people. I'm looking at all of this in order to possibly gain a thin slice of information that may give me the insight necessary to make a 1,000,000 pound decision in time to save a life... or at least my job.

At the same time I'm looking at absolutely nothing because I know that if my eyes remain fixed on one detail for too long I may miss the crucial bit of sensory data that I'm actually looking for. I know that to focus on one thing is to be blind to everything else and so I'm sifting, searching the crowd constantly looking at absolutely everything and nothing at all at the exact same time.
